Undercover officer who was beaten had extensive injuries, has not returned to work..

At the time of the assault of an undercover officer posing as a protester following the Stockley verdict in 2017, police sources said the officer suffered a bloody lip during his arrest.

Sources told the Post-Dispatch that the officer suffered much more than a bloody lip.

Four police officers were indicted Thursday on federal charges in connection with the beating and the efforts to cover it up, prosecutors said.

Luther Hall, a 22-year veteran of the police force, was working undercover to identify criminal activity during protests on Sept. 17, 2017, sources said. The protests followed the aquittal of former St. Louis police Officer Jason Stockley in the death of Anthony Lamar Smith.

Sources close to Hall say he was kicked in the face, which inflamed his jaw muscles to the point where he could not eat. He went from about 185 pounds to 165.

The cut above his lip was a two-centimeter hole that went through his face.

He also sustained an injury to his tailbone, which still causes him pain.

And in October, he underwent surgery to repair two herniated discs in his neck and one in his back. He is still wearing a collar to keep his neck immobile, and has not been able to return to duty, according to the sources.
