Anwar, Kit Siang receive WCEF leadership award
KUALA LUMPUR: PKR president-elect Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was honoured with the Patron’s Distinguished Benevolence Leadership Award by the World Chinese Economic Forum (WCEF) here last night.
The honour was in recognition of Anwar’s contribution as a prominent political leader in Malaysia and international icon for democracy, freedom and human rights.
WCEF patron Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew presented the award to Anwar, in the presence of Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (Asli) chief executive officer Datuk Michael Yeoh.
Yeoh said despite being jailed twice, Anwar bore no bitterness against his jailers and his forgiving nature enabled him to work closely with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the historic 14th General Election.
“Tonight we remember and honour Anwar for his humility and sense of justice, many has held him up to be Malaysia’s Nelson Mandela,” he said at the special conferment ceremony and gala dinner of WCEF here.
Apart from Anwar, DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang and former United Nations Under-Secretary-General Noeleen Heyzer were also presented with the WCEF’s Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award.
In accepting the award, Anwar said he held similar belief with Dr Mahathir that Malaysia would be lagging behind without development brought by the local Chinese.
“The Chinese (people) play an important part in the development on this country, and today we see Malaysia becoming successful where wealth is shared among all Malaysians.
“Looking ahead, I would also want to invite foreign Chinese companies to consider Malaysia as a major destination for trade and investment,” he said. -- BERNAMA © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
